SCK•CEN organises a visit for finalists of Vlaamse Fysica Olympiade

The Vlaamse Fysica Olympiade (or Flemish Physics Olympiad) is a scientific competition that takes place annually and in which students of the third grade secondary education are tested on their physics knowledge, insight and experimental skills. Some 3000 students entered this Physics Olympiad. After two rounds, 17 laureates were selected for the finals.

The SCK•CEN Academy offered a visit of SCK•CEN’s technical domain to the finalists and their physics teachers on Wednesday 25 April 2018 in the afternoon. In total, 11 finalists and 6 teachers took part in the visit.

The first part took place in the SCK•CEN Lakehouse where students and teachers learned more about the operation of the BR2 research reactor. Afterwards, the participants imagined themselves as a reactor pilot in the old BR3 control room which is exhibited in the Lakehouse.
Subsequently, participants were accompanied on the SCK•CEN technical domain where the BR2 reactor building could be looked at and commented on from a closer perspective. The participants also got the unique opportunity to attend mechanical tests and electron microscopy recordings in the Laboratory for High and Medium Activity. Finally, the participants were guided in the technology hall between the experimental set-ups which are part of the research for and the implementation of the MYRRHA project.

Both students and teachers left SCK•CEN with a smile. All of them had indeed experienced a pleasant and instructive afternoon. We wish all finalists good luck in the final of the Flemish Physics Olympiad!
