Introduction

Metagenomics tools are becoming increasingly important in different fields of biology. From the study of the gut microbiome to the investigation of soils, specialized tools are emerging rapidly. There is a growing need to benchmark existing tools, combine them in user-friendly pipelines, and develop complementary tools where existing ones are insufficient. During this internship, the student will have the opportunity to consolidate their knowledge of bioinformatics while improving the software currently used at SCK•CEN.

Objective

At least one of the following will be achieved

•Benchmarking of existing tools/pipelines for metagenomics functional annotation
•Participation in the development of a metagenomics assembly tool
•Analysis of metagenomic datasets currently under investigation at SCK•CEN (the datasets will be slecetd at the begining of the internship in order to be relevant to current research)
•Development of a GUI which integrates existing tools/pipelines for use by non-bioinformaticians

The minimum diploma level of the candidate needs to be
