The course on "Preparedness and response for nuclear and radiological emergencies" addresses the state-of-the-art in nuclear and radiological emergency management including the latest international recommendations, the lessons learned from the Fukushima accident and the challenges we still face. The main objective is to provide fundamental knowledge and practical advice to all actors involved in emergency planning and response.

Main topics in the course are the principles of intervention; radiological evaluations; decision-support tools; different aspects of planning and organization in off-site emergency response; economic, social and psychological impact; European Community legislation; and international data and information exchange.

The course is organized by the SCK CEN Academy for Nuclear Science and Technology, in collaboration with the main European emergency management actors and the European platform NERIS (Preparedness for Nuclear and Radiological Emergency Response and Recovery, www.eu-neris.net).

Due to the COVID-19 situation, the training course will be held in an online format. The training course is scheduled to two time slots per week (Monday and Thursday), spread over three weeks. For the detailed schedule, please find it under the tab 'Programme'. Theoretical modules will be given through live stream allowing participants to interact and ask questions. These modules are complemented with videos as an alternative for the visits.

In memoriam Dr. Wolfgang Weiss

It is with great sadness that we learn of the passing of Dr. Wolfgang Weiss on June 4, 2021. With Wolfgang Weiss, radiation protection has lost one of its most highly respected experts worldwide, who has shaped and advanced radiation protection and emergency protection nationally and internationally over decades like no other. He was significantly involved in the development of the European research platforms MELODI and NERIS and he has been a highly valued lecturer in our preparedness course for years. We extend our condolences to his family, friends and colleagues.
